Should you build your business on a small platform? Comparing Teachery to ThriveCart

Our take. If you are launching a first course and want something simple and personal, Teachery works, and the founders are open about being a two-person team. If your courses are your income, that same fact is the risk: no 24/7 support, one payment provider, and a new version still shipping core features. ThriveCart carries less of that risk: a full team, an independently audited Level 1 PCI checkout, and a lower starting price. That is where we would build.

Why the platform shows up in your valuation

Most business we take to market gets the same question from buyers: what does this business depend on that the owner does not control?

For a course business the platform is usually the biggest item on that list. It holds the content, the checkout, the student records and the affiliate tracking. If it goes down on launch day, revenue stops.

Buyers price that risk in. In our experience a business that can show a stable, well-resourced stack gets fewer questions in diligence and a cleaner path to closing. A platform that depends on two people is key-person risk one step removed from your own business.

Five things to check before you commit to any platform:

•      Who answers when something breaks, and how fast.

•      Whether the company holds its own payment security certification or relies on its processor’s.

•      How many payment methods your customers can actually use.

•      What a migration off the platform would cost you in time.

•      Whether the pricing you signed up for is the pricing you will keep.

What a two-person team means when something breaks

Teachery is run by its two founders, Jason and Caroline Zook, who have built it since 2013. Customers quoted on their site describe it as fun and easy to use, and the founders answer support personally. That is a strength when things are quiet. It is the limit when they are not: their site says they do not offer 24/7support, and there is no engineering team behind the founders to pick up a problem while they handle everything else.

The current rebuild shows the trade-off. Teachery 4.0 launched on 20 October 2026 as a soft launch at 97% feature complete, with affiliate payouts, automations and email integrations still due in mid-November and PayPal planned for the end of 2026. Support for the old version ends on 31 January 2027. None of that makes it a bad product. It is simply what a two-person company can ship at a time, and your launch calendar does not always wait for it.

Where Teachery is the better fit

Teachery keeps things simple on purpose. One price covers every feature, with unlimited courses, students and memberships, a free custom domain and 0% platform fees. There are no tiers to climb and nothing to unlock later. Support comes from the founders themselves, which plenty of their customers prefer to a ticket queue.

At $70 a month or $950 for life, with a 14-day free trial, it is a sensible choice for a solo creator who wants one tool, a flat price and a personal relationship with the people who build it. If that describes you, Teachery is worth a look before you decide.

What you get with ThriveCart

ThriveCart is a company rather than a duo: dedicated product, engineering and support teams, and $35M raised in 2023. In July 2026 it completed a five-month independent audit by A-LIGN and received PCIDSS v4.0.1 Level 1 Service Provider certification, the highest level available. Teachery runs its payments through Stripe and publishes no certification of its own.

What you get with ThriveCart
ThriveCart by the numbers. Figures as reported by the company, March and July 2026.

This product started as a checkout and funnel builder and now bundles its course platform, ThriveCart Academy, into every plan. Standard at $47 a month covers checkout pages, unlimited products and funnels, one-click upsells, A/B testing, cart recovery and course hosting with unlimited students. Pro+ at $87 a month adds the affiliate centre with automated payouts, dunning, sales tax automation, custom domains and multi-user access. A $495 lifetime Standard licence is still sold, every monthly plan has a 30-day free trial, and platform fees are 0% on both platforms (you pay Stripe or PayPal directly).

In 2026 ThriveCart also added marketing automation (VBOUT), visual design (PiktoChart) and webinars (Stealth Seminar) to the platform. That is the kind of investment a funded team can make and Two-person team cannot.

If you decide to switch

Moving a course business is mostly admin, and it is far easier when you plan it before a launch rather than during one.

1.   List every product, price point and payment plan you sell today.

2.   Export your customers and students from your current platform.

3.   Rebuild the products in ThriveCart and run a test purchase on every checkout.

4.   Redirect the old checkout links and send your affiliates the new ones before you switch.

ThriveCart’s Enterprise plan includes a managed migration if you would rather hand the whole job over.

The short version

If you run one course as a side project, either platform will do the job, and Teachery’s simplicity is a real advantage there. If the business pays your bills, or you ever want to sell it, build on the one with the deeper bench: a full team, audited payment security, more ways to get paid and a lower starting price.
